at the intersection of Finance and Machine Learning, I want to test new approaches that challenge the conventional wisdom. My specific interests lie in information extraction, processing, and propagation, both by humans and machines. When something happens in the world, how does it affect the flow of capital resources? I am a strong believer in inefficiency, disagreement, and behavioral biases as driving forces in the massively complex networks that are modern financial markets.

My first interaction with Machine Learning and Finance (separately) was during my undergraduate degree at Princeton University. As a software engineer and research scientist at Bloomberg LP in New York, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of problems at the frontier of text and financial markets: from sentiment analysis and impact models, to parsing regulatory filings, and detecting relevant events in social media. Today, I want to dive deeper into the mechanisms that drive information processing in financial markets, not just from a product-driven perspective, but through a holistic research agenda. It is for this reason that I felt a program whose aim is to revolutionize the way we use data in finance would be an ideal nurturing environment to launch my academic career.

About me: I was born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to an English father and Italian mother, giving me access to three different nationalities and passports. I am married to the wonderful Anastassia Fedyk, a researcher in Behavioral Economics and Finance at Harvard University. We have been together for 10 years, and both attended Princeton University for our undergraduate degrees. I enjoy building things outside, weight lifting, cooking, and going on holiday to exotic places.

James Hodson is based at Jožef Stefan Institute 2016-2019, and his research project is Deep Knowledge Extraction from Financial, Business and Social Text
